Portugal – Azores
An Archipelago of 9 islands about 1/3 of the way into the Atlantic Ocean, in a line between Lisbon and New Jersey. Only 3 of the 9 islands actively produce wine; 2 of the DOCs, Pico and Biscoitos, are known for fortified wines, while Graciosa DOC makes a fragrant and musky wine loved by the islanders called ‘Vinho de Cheiro’. The majority of the vines are still grown in traditional ‘currais’, small enclosures that measure 6×9 feet and built from volcanic stone. These rooms protect the vines from coastal breeze and help keep the vines warm at night by radiating the heat of the sun collected during the day.
